Wood Stories Part I

Every custom hand made Frame at Frameworks Berlin has a story. Here are some of them:

Aus Hamburg:

hand-made-picture-frames-blog-01At the very beginning of Frameworks in May 2014, I received an email from a woman who lived just outside of Hamburg. She was absolutely excited to have found information about our custom picture frames from recycled wood. She had also just happened to clean out her Father’s basement, where she happened to come across some outstanding wood. I asked her to send me some photos, and sure enough, there was some beautiful turquoise tables, an old hand-made-picture-frames-blog-02walking cane, and ping pong rackets. I was very very interested in upcylcing this wood, especially the table. But, she was in the Hamburg region, and although the antique items were desirable, I was not going to drive up there to get them. When I wrote her to tell her, she had a solution— she insisted on shipping them to me! I was astounded by the prospect, but she was very insistent, and ended up breaking up the table and all items that could fit into a box, and actually shipped them to me in Berlin! We just this past January 2015 made some beautiful turquoise blue exchangeable picture frames from her wood! Many many thanks to you.

Berliner Garden Colony

hand-made-wood-picture-frames-blog-03This is one of the nicest experiences I had collecting wood. I was contacted by Susanne, asking if I was interested in taking a look at the wood she was ripping out of the small garden house she had just got in the summer 2014. It was a Saturday and I went down to check out the wood. It had a very unique pattern on it, due to the fact that it was attic wood. I was interested, hand-made-wood-picture-frames-blog-04and said I would be by on Sunday to pick up. Well Sunday was bright shinning sun, beautiful day. I started cleaning up the wood right away, outside of her little garden house that was being renovated. Recycled products are not “free” as many people believe. Once the wood is found, it then has to be cleaned of anything dangerous, including all the metal that is in the wood. So an hour into this process, she comes over and tells me that brunch is ready. I was hesitant, but she was very much expectant that I join. And so I did. Not only was I able to pick up some beautiful recycled wood from Susanne, but I got brunch and a friendship out of it! We see each other to this day! Thank you for the amazing story!

Ronald Puhle

hand-made-wood-picture-frames-blog-06Ronald, like Susanne, had just rented a small garden house in a different area of Berlin. He fortunately sent me an email, asking if I would be interested in sorting through the junkyard he inherited. I asked for some photos before I went over there, and you can see what I got back. But I was interested, so I went over. Looks can be deceiving. I was able to sort through that junk pile and found tons of beautiful wood. Multiple colors, pinks, greens, whites, and natural wood. The place was a total mess. I spent a while there sorting through everything, and I am sure that Ronald was disappointed that I didn’t take MORE with me. During our very brief discussion, he happened to mention that he was a hobby photographer, and might I be interested in using some of his photos? Well, I had no idea what to expect, so I asked him to send me a sample. Ronald sent me just over 1000 photographs! His photos are so diverse in theme, style, character, color, everything. It was an astonishing collection, and I had to narrow it down big time. Since then, Ronald and I have had the fortunate pleasure of doing some business together! He has provided Frameworks with tons of photos for our exchangeable frames. Most of the photos are Berlin themed black and white photos. Hundreds have already been sold on the markets. We are looking forward to updating our collection of photos from Ronald and having them in our exchangeable frames for the upcoming 2015 market season.

Why Recycled Materials?

recycled-picture-frames-berlin-01People often ask me how I came up with the idea of using recycled materials for our custom picture frames, and I have to admit, it wasn’t a novel idea. Recycled products are currently very trendy right now, and I am very thankful for that.

Recycling is a very easy and conscious way to make a personal and positive impact on the world in which we live. Not only does this greatly impact the natural environment we live in, but it also affects the way we personally see the world and engage with material goods when we begin to consider how products came to fruition.

recycled-picture-frames-germanyEnvironmentally, our wealth in the West has lead to a consumer based culture that fuels our desire for more products and ultimately leads to creating more waste. Not just more trees being cut down, or the bi annual updated version of a new product, but also simply from garbage—packaging on products, most of which are not biodegradable. As our landfills fill up, recycling can simply help to reduce the pollution caused by waste. Clearly, the use of a recycled item leads to less habitat destruction (which looks like deforestation).

Personally, by using or buying a recycled product, you are literally preserving a piece of history, and simultaneously helping to preserve natural resources for future generations. Every item has a story. It was once something else. If you get to know that story, that makes everything more powerful and interesting. Once you become aware of how your buying patterns, you can easily make small changes that make big difference.
